Knill’s charges currently occupy twelfth place in the league table.

Leading the team of matchday officials will be Leeds based, referee Jon Moss.

Mr Moss, a Primary School Headteacher, is in his sixth season as a league referee.

This will be his third appointment with the Gills, and the previous two have not been without incident. In the first, in 2006, Ronnie Jepson’s side struggled to scrape a two-all draw against a 10 man Brentford outfit that had midfielder John Mousinho in goal. The second appointment was for the one-all home draw against Charlton last season, which included John Nutter’s unfortunate “well placed” own goal.

A drab and dreary 90 minutes saw few opportunities created, with Lance Cronin rarely called upon to do anything other than gather the odd overhit long ball, while at the other end Gillingham looked equally toothless, with the strike partnership of Mark McCammon and Cody McDonald failing to fire.

A midfield stalement ensued, with the match ending in goalless, leading to a penalty shoot-out.

Youngster Stefan Payne and Danny Spiller missed for Gillingham, while Craig Easton and Anthony Grant failed to find the net for Southend, meaning the shootout went into sudden death. Jack Payne stepped up, but his penalty was saved by Rhys Evans, leaving Blair Sturrock, son of manager Paul, to smash home the decisive spot-kick and send the Shrimpers through.

After 24 league games without an away victory, I’d imagine most supporters have gone through every wardrobe combination, coach seat, pie filling and any other superstition that might somehow change our form on the road. I know I have. I’ve swapped football tops for shirts, chicken balti for beef and onion and, to my disappointment, all to no avail. And although I don’t know whether our manager indulges in a pre-game Pukka, Andy Hessenthaler, after only one away game, has already reviewed his attire, swapping the shorts and coat that served him so well at Hereford for one of his sharpest suits.

Whether it was a fashion statement or a change in superstition, I don’t know, but it was one of the few differences between yesterday’s game and the Hereford trip two weeks before. A draw, plenty of chances, disappointment at the end. Even a last-minute dipping volley from Andy Barcham, somehow tipped over by man-of-the-match Barry Roach, was nearly identical to Danny Spiller’s attempt a fortnight before. Superstitions have turned to patience – it really is only a matter of time.

Barcham caused Morecambe all kind of problems in the first half, constantly getting behind the defence and creating chances. Roach parried his shot into the path of Mark Bentley who had his attempt cleared off the line. Barcham, again, had another shot turned wide and debutant Lance Cronin, at the other end, palmed the ball around the post. Barry Fuller provided a reassuring presence at right-back and Matt Lawrence looked more comfortable in the middle. Cody McDonald was handy, while even Mark McCammon produced a decent 15-minute display, linking up well with Adebayo Akinfenwa.

But we didn’t score first. In fact, we still haven’t led in a game this season and had we gone one-up yesterday afternoon, we may well have scored two or three. That was our only error yesterday and something we must work on at Southend on Tuesday and Bury on Saturday. We’ve got a team creating chances, players that can score goals and we’re starting to look quite good. But we must score early and shift the initiative. Craig Stanley’s free header left us with too much to do much like Cheltenham on day one and Lincoln the week before.

Spiller, despite being off colour yesterday, did well at the back-post to head in Chris Palmer’s free-kick and should have doubled his total when through on goal a few minutes later, instead blazing over.

But we are unbeaten away. Not only that, we have now taken more points on the road than we have at Priestfield – and who would have thought that after four games? A couple of wins now, and it’ll look like quite a good start. A couple of away wins in a row, and I might become superstitious again.

On Saturday, Morecambe’s Paddy Roche eclipsed Bartlett’s performance with a display that begged the question, why is he playing in the lowest tier of the Football League? Roche produced save after save as the visitors strove to end their away day hoodoo including a final minute save from Andy Barcham.

Spiller grabbed an 84th minute equaliser to salvage a point from what would have been the gravest of injustices. Despite picking the ball out of the net following a Craig Stanley goal on the hour, Lance Cronin, making his League debut for the Gills, left the field with his bright yellow kit still in pristine condition having made just a single save in the duration of the match.

The longest journey of the season had been completed in a little over five hours and as we strolled past the Globe Arena, heading for the front and some welcome fish and chips, there was a brisk wind that was producing choppy waters out at sea. That wind was going to prove difficult for both sides from 3 o’clock onwards.

As well as Cronin, there was a league debut for Cody McDonald and a welcome return to fitness for skipper Barry Fuller and Jack Payne. Dropping down to the bench were Kevin Maher, John Nutter and Josh Gowling.

Within the first five minutes Roche began his single-handed campaign to thwart the visitors, turning aside a Barcham effort and comfortably collecting a shot from Spiller.

On the half hour the 200 strong Gillingham contingent held the heads in their hands as Roche palmed a Barcham shot into the path of Mark Bentley, whose goalbound shot was cleared from the line by a Morecambe defender.

Barcham was causing the Shrimper’s defence all sorts of problems and when he was played in on goal by Adebayo Akinfenwa, once again it was Roche to the home side’s rescue.

The last act of the half saw a Spiller free kick touched over by the keeper and you would have forgiven the stadium announcer if he had read the half time score as Roche 0 Gillingham 0.

Sammy McIlroy made a half time substitution that added more of a threat from the home side in the second half. Paul Mullin came on and taxed the Gillingham defence far more than they had been in the previous 45.

Gillingham continued to dominate, another opportunity for Spiller was spurned, and it came as a surprise when a cross from the left by Mark Duffy found an unmarked Craig Stanley who steered his header past a helpless Cronin to give the home side an undeserved advantage after an hour.

It was a goal that came from nothing and it took the wind from the visitors’ sails for a period afterwards before Andy Hessenthaler rejuvenated the attack bringing Luke Rooney and Mark McCammon into the action, replacing McDonald and Bentley. Cody McDonald had a quiet first appearance and was, if not 100% fit, certainly a little rusty.

Gillingham’s deserved equaliser arrived with eight minutes remaining. Barry Fuller was fouled on the edge of the box and from the resultant free kick taken by Chris Palmer, Spiller ghosted in unnoticed at the far post to direct a header into the net off the far post.

The Gillingham fans celebrated wildly, as much in relief as in jubilation; such would have been the injustice of defeat. They should have been delighting in victory in the closing stages as Danny Spiller blasted a shot over the bar from inside the box and then saw Andy Barcham’s final effort turned to safety by the duly announced man of the match, Paddy Roche.

Six points could and perhaps should have been attained in these opening two away fixtures, as it is, it is only two. The sages say that you make your own luck but on this occasion (and the one previous) it has been to Gillingham’s misfortune to find themselves thwarted by two keepers at the very top of their game.

After the visit to Edgar Street, I promised not to complain in the face of functionality. Sorry to renege but, despite having to concede that the Globe Arena is a vast improvement on the dilapidated Christie Park, this is another soulless, modern stadia with a design off the same template as Colchester and Shrewsbury.

Good progress was being made on the way home until a distressed horse in need of counselling brought both sides of the M40 to halt for an hour and a half at Banbury. See, it’s not just the club that is suffering from bad luck.

The referee, Surrey based, Gavin Ward, will be a familiar figure to Gills fans as he has officiated on numerous occasions at Priestfield as an Assistant Referee and in the middle.

The former Sittingbourne based official started his career in at the age of 13, and progressed to run the line at National Group, Select Group and FIFA levels.

As an Assistant Referee he officiated at a Championship Play-Off Final and at an FA Trophy Final.

He is in his fourth season as a National Group Referee and this will be his fourth appointment with Gillingham.
Travelling Gills fans should be able to sample the bar and catering facilities at the away end.

Making his way across the Pennines will be match referee Mark Brown.

Mr Brown was promoted to the National Group of referees for this season after at least five seasons as an Assistant Referee.

This season the Hull based official has refereed two games and has issued six cautions. Last season he officiated three games in the Conference and issued a hefty 17 yellow and two red cards.

Talking to the PGMOL website he credited a number of people for their help and influence on his career, colleagues, mentors and other officials. He also praised his ex-wife saying ” Also my ex-wife for moving out so I could concentrate on my football and not have to listen to her moaning all day and night!”

Let’s hope Gills’ fans won’t be moaning about him come the final whistle on Saturday.

Saturday was Gillingham’s second home game of the season and the performance in defeat against a bang average Lincoln City side was awful.

But isn’t it a bit early to boo the side off?

Some of our fans did just that at the end of both halves and it left me walking away from Priestfield more disappointed with the crowd than I was with the players.

I don’t boo. I never have. But if the players in front of you aren’t trying, I can understand when fans do boo.

But that wasn’t the case on Saturday. We conceded a poor goal, then huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser. We didn’t get one.

They just weren’t clever enough or sharp enough in the key areas of the pitch. That, combined with some stand-offish defending for the Lincoln goal, was why we lost.

The team tried, so booing was out of order, as were the isolated calls from some fans for the manager to go. The manager and the players will now know that a significant proportion of our support will turn on them all too quickly – and that can have a detrimental effect on the players’ performances.

We’re three games in, under the stewardship of a new manager, and that was our first defeat of the season.

Surely that’s way too early to start booing.

As afternoons go, this one couldn’t have been more frustrating.

Being really honest, I don’t think there are more than two or three Gills players who could genuinely say they played to the standard expected today.

As for Lincoln, we gave them a free goal thanks to some static defending and, while they didn’t have the confidence, or perhaps the wherewithal to get a second, they did a remarkably good job of killing the game, packing the defence, wasting time and disrupting the play whenever the opportunity presented itself. They won’t win many friends with that sort of cynical approach, but they got the three points, and they, and their fans, won’t care a jot tonight.

And the third team involved in the game, the officials, did themselves no favours either.

The referee, a certain Mr. Malone, was making his second league appearance, and based on that performance, he should be made to prove himself more consistently at non-league level before being awarded with a third.

He looked unfit physically, and his reluctance to leave the middle third of the field meant he got a host of decisions wrong.

One, which should have seen a Lincoln centre half dismissed for taking out Danny Spiller when clean through on goal, was as bad a decision as we’ve seen for a while.

But the worry for Gills fans should focus on the team. The tactics were wrong from the start, but after giving the players 25 minutes to make it work, manager Andy Hessenthaler, to his credit, changed things.

We reverted to 4-4-2, but then the issue of the formation was replaced with the issue of the personnel.

In midfield, Mark Bentley – a player I’ve always been a fan of – was looking alarmingly pedestrian, while his midfield partner, Kevin Maher, had another performance to forget.

The former Southend skipper was signed to a great fanfare by former manager Mark Stimson, but since joining the Gills we’ve only seen the occasional decent half from him. Today, his decision making was too slow, his movement was too slow and his final product was poor. He was eventually hauled off to huge ironic cheers – not something you like to hear for one of our own players, but sadly he has proved, along with Mark McCammon, to be an expensive flop as a Gills player.

On the flip side, one player who looks like he might turn out to be a very good signing, striker Adebayo Akinfenwa, showed more glimpses of his ability in a match that saw his teammates providing him with scant service.

The big striker clearly isn’t fully fit yet, but when the ball was played in to his chest or feet, it always stuck, and on numerous occasions he looked to play in a teammate or get a shot away himself. If we’re to start winning games Hessenthaler needs to find a strike partner for him, pronto.

It’s very early days, and I thought the boos directed at the team at halftime and fulltime were unnecessary. The Gills tried, there’s no doubting that. But they needed to play smart too – and that, along with that little bit of quality in the final third, was sadly lacking, and eventually cost the Gills the chance of a point, or possibly three.

Hopefully the season will start for us with the Gills burying our shocking run of away games without a win by beating Morecambe next Saturday.
