Gills fail again in Stockport stalemate
Published by Simon Head on March 13, 2010
Gillingham’s awayday woes continued at Edgeley Park as they drew 0-0 with League One’s worst side.
That’s not an unfair criticism of County, who are cut off at the foot of the League One table by a mammoth margin (14 points).
But Gillingham’s failure to score at Edgeley Park gives them yet another black mark against their woeful away record this season.
Gillingham have played 19 away matches in Season 2009/2010, 18 in League One, and have failed to win any of them.
And their failure to score against Stockport makes Gillingham the ONLY side to visit Edgeley Park in league competition and NOT score.
And had it not been for a Man of the Match performance from Alan Julian, it could have been a lot worse.
The Gills keeper made a handful of decent saves to deny County, who have picked up just ten points at home this season.
Our man at Edgeley Park commented that Andy Barcham and Adam Miller both looked bright in the first half, and Simeon Jackson had one effort on the turn that narrowly missed the target, but overall the performance was another hugely disappointing one.
Jackson was forced off late on with a suspected hamstring injury, which will only add to manager Mark Stimson’s woes.
Despite a vote of confidence from his chairman, Stimson has failed to turn around Gillingham’s abysmal away form and after missing what, on paper at least, looked like Gillingham’s best chance of an away win this afternoon, fans looking at the Gills’ run-in will start to wonder if the team will go through the entire season without registering a single away win.
THE RUN-IN
HOME GAMES: MK Dons, Southend, Brighton, Leeds, Southampton
AWAY GAMES: Charlton, Oldham, Millwall, Norwich, Wycombe
