Stimson looking to strengthen before the window shuts
Published by Simon Head on January 29, 2010
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson is looking to seal at least one more deal before the transfer window closes at 5pm on Monday.
His man target is Colchester United striker Scott Vernon, who is attracting interest from a quartet of League One clubs, including Gillingham and Tranmere Rovers.
And the Gills boss explained that Vernon is higher on his wish-list than Norwich’s experienced hitman Jamie Cureton.
“We’d like to bring at least another striker in just to help the ones we’ve got,” said Stimson.
“[Cureton is] one we’re looking at, but the boy Vernon’s probably a higher priority for me. It’s just a matter of waiting for the chairman to try and sort something out with Colchester.
“I think he gives us something else. I know Cureton’s played at a higher level than him and scored more goals, but I just think at the present time, after seeing the boy Vernon here with us, he would be a good addition for us and he could be long-term as well.”
“There’s four clubs interested in him [and] we’re one of those. So in the next couple of days he’ll probably make a decision.”
Stimson also spoke about the imminent return of Danny Jackman in the video, which you can watch right here.
