Gills crash out at the hands of Stanley
Published by Simon Head on January 20, 2010
Gillingham extended their winless away run to an embarrassing 14 games as they sank to a depressing 1-0 defeat to Accrington Stanley.
The hosts took control of the game from the off and dominated Mark Stimson’s side for the majority of the game.
However, some poor finishing from the Stanley forwards meant the Gills went in at halftime with the scores level at 0-0.
But despite plying their trade in a higher division, the Gills failed to create enough chances to challenge the League Two side, with Mark Bentley’s opportunity early in the second period the only serious chance for the Gills in a tame second half.
With ten minutes remaining, the inevitable happened and, after Gillingham failed to adequately clear the danger, forward John Miles picked up a loose ball and shot past Alan Julian to send Gillingham crashing out of the competition.
Gillingham will now face fourth-placed Colchester United at Priestfield on Saturday as the Gills return to action in League One.
With the Gills now out of every cup competition in the calendar, the attention will be firmly on one thing as the Gills enter the second half of the season.
League One Survival.
