Snow looks set to scupper Gills plans

Published by Simon Head on January 7, 2010

Gillingham are appealing for fans to help groundstaff clear the Priestfield pitch of snow, but is the game really going to go ahead?

With temperatures plummeting on Tuesday and Wednesday as the nation is covered in a thick layer of snow, the club are doing their utmost to ensure the match can go ahead as planned, but other factors may well see their sterling efforts go to waste.

For starters, our opponents, Tranmere Rovers, have a huge distance to travel to get from the Wirral to Kent and, with roads proving virtually impassable up and down the country, that journey may become an impossible one.

Then, of course, there’s the issue of fan safety. Many matches have already been postponed this week, despite the pitches themselves being playable. Most notably, Arsenal’s match with Bolton, scheduled for last night, could have taken place based on the state of the Emirates Stadium pitch. But the conditions outside the stadium made the area potentially dangerous for supporters and that was a major reason for the postponement.

A small rise in temperature that would melt the ice on the roads and pavements might see the game go ahead this weekend, but with weather forecasters predicting a freezing end to the week, that is looking increasingly unlikely.

All we can do is keep our fingers crossed!
