fomblog: Oldham (H)
Published by Lee Clifton on November 19, 2009
With the weather forecast predicting heavy gale force winds and torrential rain I decided to look out my window to see how the weather was doing and though it was windy it looked dry outside, still not taking any chances I decided to wear three layers because the wind will go right through me.
I made sure I had everything on me (Money, Mobile Phone, Season Ticket & my coat) and I was going to need my coat today and I left my house at 1.00 beating Stewart out the door this weekend as he was going to a mates house and Stewart said to me “you badly need to win this one” and he was right because Gillingham so badly need the three points today and Oldham will be stern opposition.
Walking down to Rainham Train Station was a more challenging task duo to the wind and it felt like I was walking into a wall such was the force of the wind and almost blew me over but for the time being at least it remand dry – I got to Rainham Train Station at 1.20 and brought my return ticket to Gillingham and as I walked through the ticket barriers the heavens really did start to open and when they opened the down pour of rain was so severe that the train to London Victoria was delayed by ten minutes.
So my train arrived ten minutes late and quite a few of us wanted to be on as quick as possible and I got on the train and stood by the doorway and because of the wind the train was running at a slower pace even more so by the time we reached the level crossing, so I was off the train at Gillingham and because I got on the back carriage on the train I was going to get soaked as soon as I got off the train, As I got off the train I noticed there were a few lads with bikes (who either were brave or stupid) who decided to wear a shirt & shorts in this weather.
I saw a few Gills supporters by the exit of Gillingham Train Station and they clearly didn’t want to get soaked while I made my way towards Priestfield Stadium taking my usual route and I stopped off on the newsagents on the way to the ground to buy my 500 ML bottle of Coca Cola and once I paid for my drink I made my to the ground.
I had made my way to the ground and as I was outside the Medway Stand it just hit me that I forgot my Gills scarf and my first reaction was “damm I forgot my scarf” – my Gillingham Scarf is abit of a lucky charm and part of a superstition I guess because the first two games I took that scarf with me was the home match against Rochdale in the playoffs and the final at Wembley so it has always been a good luck charm and I am hoping that I wouldn’t rule missing my scarf by full time.
I went into the Club Shop to buy my match day programme and I again asked about the playoff DVD and the new Gillingham book and by Christmas is when they should both be available in stock was the answer I got, I been asking for both for a while now and I been asking for the Playoff DVD since the very start of the season so I have been very persistent but if the DVD isn’t available then it isn’t available.
I went into the ticket office and brought my FA Cup ticket for the Burton Albion home match and I been trying to tempt a few mates to go and watch the Gills and entice them to come along by saying “IF we get a big team in round three then that stub for The Burton game might get you for the big match” but my mates either are not interested or prefer to use their money doing something else on a Saturday afternoon, also it is very difficult to tempt those who support Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham to come down to the Priestfield and support The Gills and the reality is unless we get our day in the sun or reach Wembley then a game against Burton just doesn’t appeal to anyone with a parting interest.
I then made my way to the turnstile’s and brought two tickets for the 50/50 match day lottery and so I was inside the ground by 2PM which all in all is roughly the usual time I tend to make it for a home game and I had used the heater in the toilets to dry my coat as I got well and truly soaked making my way towards the ground though my Mobile Phone remained dry mostly because I was wearing a water proof.
I made my way to my seat and Porkipe100 tends to take a cloth with him to dry our seats and I took one look at the floor and felt it would be a good idea to put my match day programme in his bag, I put my Burton ticket in with the programme and everyone around me including MarkInKent had decided like me to buy our tickets for The Burton game today so us regular’s will be their for the cup match.
First discussion point we had was about the Haye V Valuev fight and though I didn’t pay to watch the fight I saw the highlights of the fight on Sky Sports News and it was really more like a game of Chess then a full on Boxing match because Haye needed to land a few good punches without being punched himself because one right hand from Valuev is going to at the very least knock Haye off balance and while the sheer size of Valuev is enough to strike the fear of living daylight’s into any opponent I didn’t think Valuev was aggressive enough and had Valuev used all of his brute strength to his advantage then he might have retained the belt but still well done to Haye on being World Champion.
Pre match was mostly about how we are going to cope without Simeon Jackson today and would McCammon and Brandy play alone-side each other upfront (well that was how I felt we would line up anyway) and looking at Oldham’s away form their a hard side to break down and only 5 goals conceded shows just what we are up against here because Oldham are a well organized side so clearly we needed to score early to try and open the game up.
The conditions were obviously going to play their part and you wonder if we should play McCammon as that would allow us the option to go long and Mark could held the ball up so the likes of Brandy, Weston and Barcham could assist and run onto any nod downs that could fall to someone’s feet.
Looking round the ground and both corners of The Rainham End were not exactly full and Oldham had a very small away support partly because they have had 2-3 away games in a row before this one and apparently their was a pitch inspection in the morning which might have put a few off from turning up, we then heard their was a five minute delay and Gillingham will kick off at 3.05 and I thought that might have been so that a coach load of Oldham supporters can get to the game in-time because their away following looked very light to say the least.
We could see that the advertisement board on The Gordon Road Stand had fallen off but I saw something else just as concerning as part of the roof on the Gordon Road Stand had been lifted and a gust of wind could take the tile off completely, this tile was right near the flood light and compared to the roof tiles nearby then this tile was defiantly lifted and if blown off could see the match abandoned duo to player and supporter safety.
Eventually we heard the team news over the PA system and that kick off would be delayed by five minutes and the team news as follows…… Royce, Palmer, Gowling, Fry, Nutter, Maher, Lewis, Bentley, Weston, Barcham, Brandy SUBS Julian, Payne, Yussuff, Rooney, Oli, McCammon, Pugh
Sean Gregan got his usual boo whenever his name was mentioned but five years ago he would have been a player that Gillingham would of loved to have signed as a replacement for Hessenthaler and Sean is very much a player you hate on the opposition side but love to have in your own team even though his legs have gone abit these days.
Three strikers on the bench for the Gills so plenty of attacking options but no Garry Richards so we had no defensive cover, and if Gowling or Fry get injured then Bentley will have to drop back into defence.
Speaking with fellow supporters around me pre match and this is a match we can win but the conditions meant that this was never going to be a classic so we will have to remain patient and take our chances when they come our way because we won’t get many chances to score because Oldham have been so water tight on their travels this season.
We knew straight away that we were playing a 4.2.3.1 / 4.4.1.1 formation and the surprise was McCammon not starting alone-side Brandy upfront because everyone felt that we be sticking with a 4.4.2 formation from last weekends win over Southend, but the general concessious from those around me was that McCammon will come on around the hour mark if we needed a fresh pair of legs and all I could think of was that Mark felt he was not fit enough to start.
Special praise must goto the four Gillingham mascots on Saturday who were all very brave to wear shirt and shorts in freezing conditions, they all looked frozen when they all ran towards The Medway Stand and no doubt put on additional layers once the match had started.
ANYWAY ONTO THE MATCH……….
Straight from kick off and the referee (who was wearing pink) decided that both teams should change ends at the very start of the match and like everyone else I hate it when we kick towards The Rainham End in the first half because it just doesn’t feel right because usually at half time you think oh well least we are kicking towards The Rainham End in The Second Half so we had to hope we can score early and go in at half time with a slight advantage.
The first ten minutes saw both teams try and get used to the conditions and the game was very stop and start during the opening ten minutes as their was five fouls in the opening ten minutes but the wind was making that final pass all that bit harder plus both teams were playing two defensive midfielders to try and stifle how each other play so neither team could get to grips to the match during this passage of play.
Febian Brandy again showed his trickery and he manage’s to draw a foul from Sean Gregan and with Nutter and Palmer standing over the ball you wonder who was going to take this free kick but the way Palmer was standing it was clear that Palmer was going to curl this one and have a go himself, Palmer got the ball over the wall but it was straight down the throat of Flahavan – It was a decent strike and at least on target because if Palmer decided to go for more power then he would of cleared the crossbar with ease.
That livened the game up and again Brandy was in the thick of the action a minute later as his skill won us another free kick which was roughly 20 – 25 yards from goal and Nutter roll’s the ball across for Stuart Lewis to crack first time but Lewis’s effort was charged down by Furman and the view around us was that Furman was not a full ten yards back when we took that free kick because no-way should Furman have been able to charge Lewis’s effort down, If Stuart was more clever he could of dinked the ball over the top but Lewis went for power but it just didn’t come off this time – least Lewis tried to shoot from distance which is something we are seeing a lot more of then we were 3-4 matches ago.
Oldham finally got themselves into this match as Danny Whitaker’s free kick is struck towards goal by Chris Taylor but his effort failed to test Simon Royce but you just felt that a set piece could cause a problem or two in either box and that effort was Oldham’s first real effort in goal in the first 20 minutes.
Barcham was using his pace down the left hand side and twice in a matter of minutes he evaded two challenges, did Barcham take a knock or was he playing on with a injury, injured or not we could not help noticing that Barcham was not having as much of a effect down the left hand side that he managed to have last season but Barcham was still a threat and like many players in our squad was adapting to life in League One.
This match was hardly a classic and I think it say’s a lot about the early period of the match when I am talking about the advertisement board being blown over in The Rainham End then talking about the match itself and I guess that sums up the first 20 minutes of the game because the conditions were the clear winner and as a viewing spectacle this was mediocre to say the least. (The Gills were not performing badly in-fact they were edging this encounter just that the conditions combined with the way Oldham were set up just ruined a good game of football).
But thankfully we had Febian Brandy who was doing all he can to try and make this as entertaining as possible, great interchangeable play between Barcham and Weston saw the latter whip in a cross and Brandy’s shot needed to be blocked by Gregan otherwise Brandy would have had 2 goals in 2 matches – Lets enjoy watching this kid play because a Championship side will sign Brandy in January and Brandy is defiantly a Championship standard player so lets enjoy having him at the club for the next 10 or so games he is here.
This as a view shared by many supporters sitting around Block G that a bigger team would look to sign Brandy in January and we just have to hope that Febian enjoys his football at Gillingham so much that he like to sign on loan for the rest of the season.
Now we had a football match as the tempo had risen and the challenges were certainly flying in and we gave as good as Oldham were giving in that department and this wasn’t a match for half hearted tackles as both sides were getting dug in and doing the nitty gritty side of the game that is often un-appreciated by vital if either side are to get anything out of this match.
Barcham’s run down the left saw him tackled by Hills and we had won a corner “GO ON GILLS, COME ON” was my response and a loud cheer went up for The Rainham End as everyone was anticipating a goal and Palmer whipped in a quality cross which Marrow had to header clear at the expense of another corner and Palmer had whipped that ball into precisely the right area except that no-one had gambled on the ball and if Palmer can whip in another corner which can cause Flahavan a few problems then we could well score from this set piece – Palmer whipped in another very good cross Flahavan did very well to gather considering that his six yard box was packed and the slightest of touches could of resulted in a goal.
We won two free kicks in quick succession as Palmer was fouled and Chris whipped in a cross deep from the by-line which was begging to be headered into the back of the net but no-one had gambled and made the run to the far post while Nutter’s free kick from the edge of the penalty area went high into the Rainham End as the wind was clearly a factor in the flight of the ball, you could see where Nutter wanted to put the ball just that he put abit too much on the ball – while at the other end Nick Blackman squandered a chance to test Simon Royce as his header went over the bar with Royce already committed and we were just glad that Oldham were having so little chances in-front of goal.
Then the best chance of the match so far as Febian Brandy did very well to maintain possession of the ball and worked a chance for Curtis Weston who took one touch and curled the ball goal-wards into the top corner except that Weston had hit the very top of the crossbar and Flahavan was well beaten and I had jumped in the air expecting to celebrate a goal but only had my head in my hands as consolation, great hit by Weston and had that gone in then Weston would have another contender for goal of the season after his fantastic strike against Shrewsbury last season won Curtis that accolade.
It wasn’t all Gillingham and Oldham had a decent five minute spell as Josh Gowling puts in a goal saving challenge to deny Danny Whitaker but perhaps Oldham’s best chance of all was from Nick Blackman who’s shot via a deflection fizzed over the top of Simon Royce’s crossbar and Royce was clutching at thin air because Blackman’s effort was quality – I say deflection because from where I was sitting you could clearly hear the ball hit someone else’s foot either from the shot itself or on the way through to goal – The game had opened up and while the first 20 minutes took a while for both teams to settle the rest of the half had saw both teams raise the tempo which in turn raised the atmosphere.
Then at the end of the first half Nutter was waiting patiently as Oldham were told to go back ten yards and Bentley stood in-front of the wall and he was clearly getting pushed in the back and Bentley kept standing where he was only to be shoved again, if Nutter takes the free kick and Bentley gets shoved to the ground we could well have a penalty.
It then really kicked off and chants of “OFF, OFF, OFF” were clearly heard from the Rainham End while Gregan clearly gave some grief to The Gills supporters as I saw him turn around and Gregan was then subject to many un-savoury and non repeatable comments and it doesn’t take a genesis to realize what was being said.
Chris Taylor is the first Oldham player and only Oldham player to be booked in the first half when 1-2 should have been shown a yellow for earlier incidents and eventually we could take that free kick but Palmer’s free kick failed to test Flahavan and as far as the first half went that really was it and while the score-line suggested a dull 0 . 0, which would have been the case, had the first twenty minutes of play remanded for the whole first half but for twenty five minutes the tempo of this match had risen and Weston hitting the bar was the closest either team had come to breaking the deadlock but Blackman’s effort certainly was some strike from distance.
HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM 0 . 0 OLDHAM ATHLETIC
I felt pleased with our efforts in the first half and though the score was 0 . 0 we had edged out the first half and showed moments of genuine quality and in-particular from Febian Brandy who was clearly trying all he can to light up the place with dazzling runs because the conditions were appalling to say the least.
The talking point was about Oldham and how we expected them to get a red in the second half, I said they remind me of Chesterfield last season as you can clearly see the similarities between the two sides except Chesterfield were far dirtier as they would use un-sportsmanlike behaviour to try and gain a advantage – but WE felt that Oldham will have a player sent off in the second half.
By this point the 50/50 match day lottery was done and I got my tickets out to check if I had won and I hadn’t won anything again and Porkpie 100 didn’t win anything either and it be nice to win the big cash prize particularly before Christmas (now there is a dreaded word).
The attendance at KRBS Priestfield Stadium was announced as 4,787 and I thought we might squeeze over the 5,000 mark today but when you think of home matches and at Priestfield you think that now Gillingham are back in League One you think we be getting 5,000 at the very least, maybe the Wembley factor had worn off and we are now back to our very loyal home support but either way promotion was expecting to see crowds of 5,500 at home matches every home game and that just clearly isn’t the case.
I thought with the conditions that today is the day we be looking to make all three subs and McCammon, Oli, Rooney, Payne, Yussuff and Pugh were all out their and I felt we start looking at the subs around the 60 minute mark – Alan Julian will only come on if Simon Royce picks up a injury.
The lads came out for the second half and we were hoping and expecting Gillingham to go on from here and earn three valuable points and we badly need the win just to put a buffer between us and the bottom four, COME ON GILLS…..
SECOND HALF………
Oldham put us under a fair bit of pressure in the early spell of the first half as they won two corners and though Nutter headered the first ball clear Oldham could try again and Danny Whitaker’s deliverary second time round was a complete waste and we could re-group with a goal kick.
We just needed to keep it tight for the first 5-10 minutes, get used to the conditions and don’t do anything silly at the back because if Oldham score first then they will be super defensive and even more defensive then they had been upto this point.
The match was still stuck in midfield with several fouls breaking up play and when Lewis was fouled on roughly the halfway line we were fearing the worst, COME ON REF was my response because from where I was sitting Furman’s challenge on Stuart Lewis looked very nasty and I was looking to the bench at this point simply because the game needed a change or two.
Upto this point some of Kevin Maher’s passing was woeful and way below standard but Maher played the ball from the flank for Brandy to run onto and you can clearly see the wind catching the ball and Gregan caught Brandy who has gone to the floor, defiant penalty was my response and Brandy had to go off for treatment so who would take the resulting penalty Barcham, Weston ??? in the end Weston stepped up, COME ON, COME ON, I heard the sound of the post being struck from Weston’s penalty and their was abit of a delayed reaction and half hearted goal celebration but Weston’s penalty had put Gillingham in-front and we were 1 . 0 to the good.
NOW Oldham had to open up and we could well see a much more entertaining game as Oldham are now forced to attack and if Gillingham can score a second then surely their will be no-way back for Oldham – I looked the sub bench expecting us to make a change but both Lewis and Brandy were fit to continue and no sooner had we scored from the spot we could of sealed the win just two minutes later as a poor clearance from the back gave Barcham time to control the ball and Barcham went for goal but Flahavan tipped the ball onto the top of the crossbar- splendid save by Flahavan who has kept Oldham in the match with that save.
The resulting corner from Chris Palmer forces Flahavan again to make another decent save as Palmer’s corner kicks were causing Oldham a fair amount of problems and Oldham just had nothing to answer for Palmer’s deliverary from set plays.
Oldham were still in this match as Danny Whitaker effort from the edge of our penalty area goes off target which gets a loud cheer from The Gillingham supporters in the Rainham End but that effort was a warning that Oldham were still in this match and with 65 minutes on the clock I had a look to the bench to see who was preparing to come on because I felt we did need to make a change just to see out the rest of the match.
Oldham started to get nasty as Palmer control’s Nutter’s cross-field pass and as Palmer plays the ball Alex Marrow goes lunging in with a reckless challenge REF was my response, something stronger was said elsewhere in the ground and Marrow was rightfully shown the yellow card – COME ON REF and you just felt that Oldham were getting frustrated and one more challenge like that will see someone be given a early bath.
Keigan Parker comes on for Danny Whitaker and clearly Oldham were determined to try and get something out of the game, Parker has a decent goal scoring record at this level so we do need to pay particular attention to him but Oldham had to come at us because defending a 1 . 0 defeat doesn’t give you an extra point.
Three free kicks in just three minutes including Lewis getting tackled by Blackman really slowed the game down and you felt the ref had to give a yellow for that challenge on Lewis and Oldham were losing their tempers and going with some reckless and very dangerous challenges, you just felt if a red card was given then their chances of getting something from the game would be over.
Oldham worked the ball to the far left, a cross from this side was headered up into the air by Gowling and as the ball bounced Fry tried to header clear but Furman worked himself into a shooting position and his first time volley on the bounce was sweetly struck but Simon Royce was able to get behind it and gather with ease and less difficulty then we imagined – you could say that Furman’s strike was too sweetly struck and if he mis-hit the initial effort then Royce would have had far more difficulty keeping it out.
Furman and Holdsworth go into the referee’s notebook for fouls on Lewis and Barcham respectively and Oldham made their second change as Ryan Brooke comes on in place of Deane Smalley – we kept looking to the bench ourselves and thought someone has to come on by now surely as we needed someone to come on and just help see out the rest of the match.
Eventually Stuart Lewis comes off for Dennis Oli and Lewis was on the receiving end from a fair amount of tackles and I stood and applauded Lewis for his efforts in a tough physical encounter – Bentley will most likely drop deep to partner Maher in the holding midfield role while Oli goes down the right hand side.
Oli makes a decent introduction to the match as he wins the battle of heads tennis and we win a throw on deep in Oldham’s half and eventually we work that throw on into decent opportunity as Palmer’s short corner is whipped in but Flahavan is able to gather with ease.
By this point I couldn’t feel my toes and it was freezing plus we just entered squeaky bum time where you just held your breath and crossed your fingers and hoped Gillingham could see this out.
Brandy and Weston combined and with the aid of one deflection on the way through Weston was clean through then hacked down by Reuben Hazell and we thought that was the red card that we expected Oldham to get, for Hazell to even be on the pitch after he hacked Weston from behind was just sheer dis-belief and amazement, Maher looked stunned and I thought COME ON REF THAT HAS TO BE RED SURELY and the reaction from several home supporters was that was a red card and Hazell had to go after that.
Nuter’s free kick didn’t test Flahavan and went well wide and we were just hoping that one goal would be enough – we were defending our lines quite desperately at this point and Maher kicked the ball high up into the air and as the ball came down as the wind took the flight of the ball Weston took one touch to stone the ball dead and another to curl the ball up the flank, this happened right in-front of where me, porkpie100 and MarkInKent sit, Nicely done by Weston because that small passage of play was just top quality, others would of tried to whack that clear first time or header the ball into touch to waste abit of time but Weston turned a terrible ball from Maher into a quality ball.
Kiegan Parker who had not long been on the field is the next player to be booked after fouling Maher and you had to wonder who wasn’t booked in the Oldham side because they had about 5-6 booked by this point, Joe Colbeck comes on in place of Chris Taylor and that was Oldham’s last sub and you just felt that maybe we could use our final two remaining subs to waste abit of time.
Febian Brandy was give MOTM by the sponsor’s and really I don’t think it was about one player but more about a team effort and you could of given the MOTM to anyone and the applause would have been the same, it was very much a team effort against Oldham rather then about one or two individual performances.
The 4th official put up the board for added time FOUR yes FOUR added minutes just to add further insult and Oldham won a corner within the first of those minutes and as Colbeck swings in a out-swinging corner Royce is off his line to claim the ball at full stretch and that got a loud cheer from those in the Rainham End and everyone around me in the Medway Stand – just when you need your keeper to come up trumps Royce gather’s the ball and stops Oldham from getting a goal scoring opportunity.
Two fouls within a minute, loud cheer’s and whistle’s could be clearly heard around the ground and Flahavan had time to punt the ball long upfield and Kiegan Parker had his one chance but Josh Gowling made a crucial block and one final chance for Oldham but Hill’s corner was headered clear by Maher and that was it we had won but the ref still didn’t blow the full time whistle – COME ON REF – and as Chris Palmer prepared to take a throw on finally he blew for full time and we could celebrate, blow a sigh of relief and let out any means of frustration necessary because those were three massive, massive points for Gillingham Football Club.
FULL TIME: GILLINGHAM 1 . 0 OLDHAM ATHLETIC
How Oldham Athletic walked off that pitch with 11 players we have no idea but thankfully that didn’t come back to bite us in the backside because we badly needed that win and with some key matches coming up and back to back clean sheets against Southend and Oldham we could well start a unbeaten run here and we defiantly could do with one of those because Gillingham do need to start climbing that League One Table.
I took a few pictures for my blog and got my match day programme and ticket back from porkpie100 who kept my programme dry – and as the players came round to applaud us everyone applauded the lads for their efforts because we had to dig in and work hard for that win.
I made sure I had everything on me and bumped into MarkInKent on the way out and my initial response was “Well that will do” and “we had to work for that” MarkinKent mentioned he take three points regardless of how we get them and end of the day you cannot complain about a 1 . 0 win and sometimes you get games like that.
Lately 5PM at Priestfield feel’s like a night-time football match and it was pitch black as I made my way back to Gillingham Train Station and a few supporters in-front of me were singing “The Last Waltz” and as I made my way to Gillingham Train Station I missed the 5.13 service and the 5.20 service was running a few minutes late, I got on and stood by the doorway as I get off at Rainham and this couple asked me how much it was for Gillingham tickets and because of the whole category A and B thing for matches I mentioned for Category A you be looking at paying at least £20 but I did point out that the Cup match against Burton Albion was £15 per person – It isn’t the most glamorous of matches but money is tight and it purely depends on what you can and cannot afford but we do need to do something to get more people turning up for home matches – maybe kids for a quid will be used in future home matches to try and increase the attendance for home games.
So off the train at Rainham and I called home to see who fancies some chippy and today it was just me and I went into George’s Plaice and mentioned about The Gillingham game and with internationals Tony thought that all games were called off but League’s One & Two and all of non league continue as usual and I mentioned that Gillingham won 1 . 0 and how we had to fight for that one today.
I ordered my large portion of chips and double cheese-burger because I had hardly eaten anything pre match and I was starving so I brought my dinner and got a lift from my dad back home and I was indoor’s at 6PM and perhaps I over estimated how big a large portion of chips is or I got given more chips but I still had several chips left on my plate and I was stuffed full – but well worth it for £4.
My MOTM – Curtis Weston – though this was very much a team performance I thought Weston was superb, everything decent about how Gillingham played was because of Curtis and that effort in the first half that hit the top of the crossbar was quality, Weston showed great nerve to score from the spot even though Weston hit the inside of the post when he scored but a goal is a goal and we take any slice of luck no matter where it comes from.
Weston was clean through and clearly hacked down by Hazell but the highlight for me has to be when Weston took one touch to stone the ball dead and another to curl the ball up the flank, just fantastic awareness by Curtis to turn a bad ball into a good ball.
The three points also helps and it has been a while since we last won in the league but after two wins and two clean sheets against Southend and Oldham, maybe we are starting to turn the corner – Onwards and Upwards for The Gills.
