Gills crash out to young Canaries
Published by Simon Head on October 7, 2009
A makeshift Gills side was eliminated from the Johnstone’s Paint trophy by a youthful Norwich City side.
Substitute Cody McDonald scored the only goal of the game, cutting in from the left flank and firing a deflected shot past Alan Julian to secure the Canaries’ progression to the area quarter-finals.
Chances were few and far between for the Gills, who struggled to carve out any real clear-cut scoring opportunities. Long-range strikes from Adam Miller and Chris Palmer went close, but failed to test the City keeper, while a couple of debatable decisions from the match officials denied Adam Miller a penalty, and ruled out what looked like a fair goal for Curtis Weston.
Despite the defeat, the match proved a useful exercise for manager Mark Stimson, who took the opportunity to cast his eye over Rashid Yussuff and Jacob Erskine (pictured), who both made substitute appearances.
And with Danny Jackman ruled out for an extended period of time with a dislocated shoulder, the Gills boss will have been delighted to bring Stuart Lewis back into the side after an extended spell on the treatment table.
Gillingham will now look to get back to winning ways when they return to league action on Saturday against Wycombe Wanderers. The match, at Priestfield, kicks off at 3:00pm.
Gillingham: Julian, Palmer, Nutter, Richards, Bentley, Payne (Lewis 64), Miller (Erskine 83), Weston, Barcham, Rooney, McCammon (Yussuff 64)
