Gills mauled at St Mary’s
Published by Simon Head on October 4, 2009
Gillingham crashed to a 4-1 defeat for the second consecutive away game as they were comprehensively beaten by Southampton at St Mary’s.
Highly-rated midfielder Adam Lallana bagged a brace, while £1million signing Ricky Lambert and Ndiaye Papa Waigo also scored to floor Mark Stimson’s side.
The one bright spot from an otherwise dismal performance was Luke Rooney’s sublime chip to equalise Lambert’s opener and draw the scores level at one-all.
But that was as good as it got for the Gills, who were largely outplayed as Southampton ruthlessly punished the Gills for poor defending.
Talking to BBC Radio Kent after the match, Mark Stimson said he was embarrassed by his side’s performance and has hinted that unless he sees a noticeable improvement in their performance some of his players may face a spell out of the side.
Gillingham’s next challenge in the league sees them return to Priestfield to take on fellow promoted side Wycombe Wanderers next Saturday. The match kicks off at 3:00pm.
Gillingham: Royce, Fuller, Palmer, Gowling, Bentley, Maher, Jackman (Payne 6), Oli, Barcham, Weston, Rooney (McCammon 73)
