Gills still in contention despite defeat
Published by Simon Head on March 21, 2009
Gillingham remain in the automatic promotion places despite crashing to defeat at Grimsby as the top sides struggled in League Two this weekend.
The Gills’ unbeaten run of eight matches came to an end at Blundell Park as Grimsby ran out 3-0 winners.
Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro, Nick Hegarty and Barry Conlon netted for the Mariners as Gillingham failed to follow up on their good recent form.
But with five of the top eight also failing to win their matches on Saturday, Gillingham remain in the automatic promotion places, albeit having played one game more than the majority of their rivals.
Of the top eight sides, only Rochdale, who snatched a dramatic late victory at Wycombe, won. Table-toppers Brentford will have an opportunity to take advantage of their rivals’ slip-ups when they visit Dagenham & Redbridge on Monday night.
LEAGUE TWO: KEY RESULTS
Accrington Stanley 2-1 Exeter City
Bradford City 0-1 Port Vale
Bury 1-1 Chester City
Grimsby Town 3-0 Gillingham
Shrewsbury Town 0-0 Morecambe
Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Rochdale
Gillingham now look forward to a huge clash with Brentford at Griffin Park next weekend. Can the Gills claim a massive away victory and take another step towards promotion?
