Ones to Watch: Grimsby Town
Published by Truebluejock on March 19, 2009
The Gills sit second from top in the table whilst Grimsby Town sit second bottom and Saturday’s clash at Blundell Park is critical for both teams. Gills will be hoping to consolidate second place and move closer to leaders Brentford whilst Town need the points to keep pace with Chester, Barnet and Bournemouth. Despite their position, Town will be a stern test for the Gills as they aim for an eighth away win of the season. Truebluejock picks his ones to watch.
Defender – Ryan Bennett
The young defender is tipped for a big future in the game having made a huge impression following his release by Ipswich Town. He is the youngest player to wear the captain’s armband in the club’s history when leading the side in April 2007 against Lincoln City aged just 17. He still holds the armband. He has represented England at U18 level and was voted the club’s young player of the year last year. Having only just turned 19, Bennett already has over 80 first team appearances under his belt and has been ever present this season. He has scored 5 times this season (including one against Luton on Tuesday night) and is their second top scorer. Bennett wears the number 4 shirt.
Midfielder – Chris Llewellyn
A product of the Norwich City youth team, Llewellyn broke into the first team in the 1997-1998 season making a total of 16 appearances scoring 3 goals. He gained Welsh B and U21 honours before making a full debut against Malta in 1998 and scored his first international goal for Wales against Liechtenstein in November 2006. He lost his place in the Norwich side in 2002 and went on loan to Bristol Rovers before his release in June 2003. Chris signed for Wrexham and then Hartlepool but stayed one season before returning to Wrexham on a free in 2006. Llewellyn joined Town preseason and has started to establish himself on the first team after being used mainly as a substitute. The 29 year old wears the number 10 shirt.
Striker – Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro
“There’s only one Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro” and the 24 year old French striker has been a hit with the Mariners fans after a successful trial in December. He made his debut against Shrewsbury and helped Grimsby to record their first home league victory of the season with a 1-0 victory. He made it into the League 2 Team of the Week after setting up the winner against Wycombe Wanderers in January. He scored his first goals in a brace for Grimsby in the 5-1 derby win against Lincoln City cementing cult status at Blundell Park and once again making the League 2 Team of the Week. Akpa Akpro wears the number 26 shirt.
