Gillingham’s Boxing Day match sees them travel to Essex to take on League Two’s top scorers, Dagenham & Redbridge. Here’s our trio of Daggers players to look out for on match day.
Defender – Magnus Okuonghae
The 22 year old defender is an ever present in this his second season for the Daggers. Signed from Crawley Town in 2007 the big defender made a handful of appearances before being loaned to Weymouth. Standing at 6ft 3” and over 13 stone, the powerful stopper is a danger from set pieces and has scored two goals this season. Okuonghae is highly regarded at Victoria Road and has international honours having represented England at semi pro level.
Midfielder – Sam Saunders
The 25 year old right winger is in his 4th season with the Daggers having previously been on the books of Welling United and Carshalton Athletic and is another who has represented England at semi pro level. Saunders has set off like an express train this season notching an incredible 8 times having only scored 5 times in his previous 3 seasons. Saunders is not only a regular provider but is starting to weigh in with goals too showing why John Still rates him so highly.
Striker – Paul Benson
Completing the trio of Daggers stars to have won semi pro England caps, 29 year old Benson is making up for lost time. A real hot prospect in the amateur game, Daggers won the race to his signature in 2005 but a broken leg meant Benson was unable to settle but when fully fit in the 2006-07 season, he plundered a fantastic 28 goals in the Conference winning season. His first season at professional level was blighted by injury but he still managed to score an impressive 9 goals in 21 starts, form he has taken forward into this season. The partnership he has with Ben Strevens is the most prolific in the division amassing 24 goals in all competitions. Benson has the lions share with 15 and is certainly making up for lost time in the professional game.
