Ones to Watch: Barnet
Published by Truebluejock on December 11, 2008
This weekend Gillingham take on Barnet at Underhill, but what do we know about the Bees? we’ve picked out a trio of players to keep an eye out for this weekend…
Defender – Ismail Yakubu
Yakubu came though the ranks at Barnet from schoolboy to skipper, taking on the captain’s armband last season. The 23 year old centre half is approaching 250 first team appearances in what is his 7th season as a pro, scoring 14 goals in the process. The skipper has already scored twice this season underlying his threat from corners and his pace and power mean that Simeon Jackson will have to be at his very best to add to his tally of 9 this season. Although not the tallest centre half at 5′ 11″, Simon King and Garry Richards will have to watch the dangerous Yakubu from set pieces.
Midfielder – Albert Adomah
Tipped to play at a higher level, this speedy and tricky winger was picked up midway through last season by Bees gaffer Paul Fairclough and was an instant hit with the Barnet faithful by netting on his debut against Hereford. The ex-Harrow Borough flyer went on to make the step up from Isthmian League to League 2 look easy with impressive performances and 5 goals in 22 appearances, helping the Bees maintain their League status. He has already scored 5 times this season and the Gills back line will have to be at their best to contain Adomah, who will be looking for an early birthday present before he turns 21 on Sunday.
Striker – John O’Flynn
A deadline day signing in September from Cork City, O’Flynn has been a prolific scorer in Irish Football. Having failed to make the grade with Peterborough, O’Flynn scored 67 goals in all competitions over 7 seasons with Cork. His goal scoring exploits have earned him International recognition scoring 3 times in his 6 Republic U21 caps. He has hit the ground running with Barnet, netting 6 times in his 12 full appearances for the Bees including a brace in an impressive 2-2 draw at Shrewsbury. The 26 year old is determined to complete some “unfinished business” and prove he can make the grade in English football.
