Dennis Bergkamp vs Argentina
Published by Simon Head on January 8, 2008
The whole of England was supporting Holland when they took on Argentina in the quarter finals of World Cup France ’98. Argentina had eliminated England on penalties after one of the greatest World Cup matches of all time, but in Holland, the South Americans met their match, thanks largely to a late, great goal from the-then Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp.
Again, I’ve got two versions of this goal, the first from the BBC’s Barry Davies, who got rather excited at the goal, which was unlike him. But his reaction was nothing compared to Dutch commentator Jack Van Gelder, who produced one of the most memorable pieces of commentary from any World Cup, in any language. I’m not sure if he remembered to mention the goalscorer’s name though. Have a listen and see what you think…
